A virtual tripartite meeting was held in the final week of August between the UK-based Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI), the Embassy of Myanmar in London and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The
discussions focused on providing Myanmar farmers with access to
international-standard agricultural technologies, addressing ongoing challenges
in the agriculture and livestock sectors, and helping local agricultural products
meet international quality standards.
During
the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and
Irrigation outlined key priorities for Myanmar’s agricultural sector, including
pest and disease control, human resource development for farmers, integrated
human, plant and animal health initiatives under the One Health approach,
agricultural technology dissemination, and the reduction of chemical residues
in agricultural produce. Experts from CABI responded by proposing potential
technical solutions tailored to each focus area.
The
parties also discussed formulating targeted projects to assist farmers and
established a Tripartite Working Group (TWG), comprising representatives and
experts from the Embassy of Myanmar in London, the Ministry of Agriculture,
Livestock and Irrigation and CABI, to ensure timely and effective technical
cooperation.
Participants
included relevant officials from the Embassy of Myanmar in London, the
Permanent Secretary and agricultural experts from the Ministry of Agriculture,
Livestock and Irrigation, the CEO and senior experts from CABI headquarters,
and specialists from CABI regional centres in China, Kenya, Pakistan and
Malaysia.
