Threats to maritime security must also be considered as national security issue

 

The Tatmadaw (Navy) must be built as a navy capable of keeping abreast of regional navies by adopting strategic plans with consideration of possible maritime threats and conflict issues in addition to the maritime security sector, said Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services General Ye Win Oo at the meeting with Tatmadaw members and families from Yangon Command, Thanlyin and Dala stations at the Thanlyin station hall yesterday afternoon.

In his speech, the General underlined that the Tatmadaw (Navy) must be powerful and strong to be able to protect Myanmar’s waters.

He noted that it is necessary to faithfully combat illegal trade and drug trafficking activities in the waters of the State as a national duty.

The General urged that it is necessary to remain prepared and conduct training with the objectives of fully safeguarding sovereignty and territorial waters within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the nation, effectively performing maritime security duties to ensure the security and smooth flow of maritime trade, providing disaster relief, and protecting the national interests of the State in the offshore areas.

The General pointed out that commanders and officials need to manage their subordinate Tatmadaw members correctly and fairly, and ensure that the subordinates remain faithful, obedient and disciplined.

With regard to discipline, the General expressed his vow that acts of betrayal, operational misconduct and involvement in drugs within the Tatmadaw are absolutely unacceptable and cannot be forgiven. Betrayal includes not only betraying the State and the Tatmadaw but also betraying one’s family, and effective action will be taken against such cases.

After the meeting, the General, his wife and party cordially greeted the Tatmadaw members and their families.

Also present at the meeting were Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Htein Win and his wife, senior Tatmadaw officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and their wives, the commander of the Yangon Command, and officials.

The General and his wife planted a Gangaw (Mesua ferrea) sapling in the yard of the Naval Training Command Headquarters.
