Ashes of late Chanmyay Sayadaw set adrift at confluence of Pazundaung Creek, Yangon River and Bago River

 

A ceremony to set adrift the ashes of the Venerable Bhaddanta Janaka Bhivamsa, aged 99 and 79 vasa, the Presiding Patron of Chanmyay Yeiktha Monastery on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township, Yangon Region, was held yesterday morning at Suvarnabhumi Event Park on Thanthuma Road in Thingangyun Township, Yangon Region.

The venerable Sayadaw served as the State Ovadacariya, Rattannyu Maha Nayaka of the Shwegyin Nikaya, Abhidhaja Aggamaha Saddhammajotika, Aggamaha Kammathanacariya, Pali Pativisodhaka of the Sixth Buddhist Synod, and was a recipient of the Sakkyasiha and Government Siripavara Dhammacariya titles.

The ceremony was attended by Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and Administrator of Bahan’s Maha Withokdayon Shwegyin New Monastery, Bhaddanta Sirikancana Bhivamsa; Rector of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Bhaddanta Chekinda; Chanmyay Yeiktha Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita; and members of the Sangha, nuns at home and abroad, Union Minister for Religious Affairs U Tin Oo Lwin, regional ministers, and disciples.

Venerable Sayadaws, the Union minister and regional ministers sprayed the ashes and bones which remained after incineration with the coconut sap and kept the ashes in the golden and silver urns, which were conveyed onto the decorated float.

The urns were conveyed along a route passing through Thingangyun, Mingala Taungnyunt, Botahtaung and Kyauktada townships where disciples paid homage to the ashes of the late Chanmyay Sayadaw.

Members of the Sangha, the Union minister and party conveyed the urns and golden bags onto the throne aboard the Royal Green River vessel.

At the confluence of Pazundaung Creek, Yangon River and Bago River, the SSMNC Joint-Secretary honoured the Pariyatti and Paripatti capabilities of the late Sayadaw and shared merits dedicated to the Sayadaw.

After the ceremony, members of the Sangha were offered a day meal aboard the vessel.
