THE 230-kV Shwegyin-Thayagon power transmission line, which had been damaged by an attack in 2023, has been repaired, enabling electricity generated by the Shwegyin Hydropower Plant to be transmitted back into the national grid.
The power line was destroyed on 26 September 2023, causing 11 transmission towers in Nyaunglebin Township to collapse. As a result, the 75-MW output of the Shwegyin Hydropower Plant could no longer be transmitted to the national grid, leading to scheduled power cuts in Yangon, Ayeyawady and other areas.
Under the protection of security personnel, around 300 employees from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, with support from locals, worked to restore the damaged infrastructure. By 30 August 2026, repairs and reconnections had enabled about 80 MW, equivalent to about 3.2 million units of electricity per day, to be supplied to the national grid.
The restored power supply is sufficient to provide electricity to around 3.5 million people per day. Since 9 September, Yangon has been receiving electricity 24 hours, except in cases of power-line faults, without the need for the previous eight-hour daily load-shedding rotation.
The ministry is making efforts to repair other damaged transmission lines and strengthen the national power grid, with the cooperation of security personnel and local communities. — MNA/KTZH
