PASSENGER buses and heavy freight trucks carrying the 14 designated types of cargo and operating on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway are permitted to use the highway only after installing Telematics GPS systems. To date, a total of 6,037 vehicles have been fitted with the systems.
The installation of Telematics GPS systems began in June 2024, and so far, 3,525 passenger buses and 2,512 freight trucks have been equipped with the systems. The driving status of these vehicles is monitored 24 hours a day by the Telematics Command & Control Centre at the Nay Pyi Taw Junction toll gate. Drivers are contacted by phone to ensure that they do not exceed the speed limit of 90 kilometres per hour or stop in unauthorized areas.
Additionally, Deputy Minister for Construction U Myo Myint visited the Telematics Command & Control Centre on the morning of 9 September to inspect the monitoring and inspection operations.
During his visit, the deputy minister inspected the CCTV rooms at toll gates along the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw section, the toll collection system and the movement of vehicles across weighbridges. He instructed officials to ensure that vehicles do not exceed the permitted weight limits; systematically maintain TFI display boards, barrier arms, weighbridges, CCTV cameras and computer accessories in good working order at all times; and exercise special vigilance to ensure accurate and systematic record-keeping of toll collections. — TWA/TH
