At the invitation of His Majesty King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing paid a State Visit to Cambodia. The following is a summary of the explanations and responses given by Dr Khine Khine Soe, Deputy Minister at the Office of the President and spokesperson at the Office of the President, in response to media questions regarding the State Visit.
In her clarification, she highlighted that the high-level Myanmar delegation led by the President was warmly welcomed by Cambodia. The Cambodian people who came out to welcome the delegation were truly warm and enthusiastic.
She revealed that President U Min Aung Hlaing met Samdech Hun Sen, Acting Head of State of Cambodia. He also met the Prime Minister and the President of the National Assembly. In each of these meetings, the leaders expressed their support for the political reforms currently being undertaken in Myanmar and encouraged the peace process. They also recognized Myanmar’s efforts to re-engage with and reconcile with ASEAN and the international community.
She outlined that Cambodia will fully support Myanmar’s resumption of its active participation in ASEAN as before, and will also provide full support on the international stage. This has been the consistent position expressed during the visits to the three ASEAN countries. Now, in the fourth country the Myanmar delegation has visited, they have conveyed the same message as the previous three countries.
These countries have stated that they will fully support Myanmar in relation to ASEAN and fully support Myanmar’s position that Myanmar will pursue its own path in accordance with the Myanmar Way. Such support will be of great assistance to the processes that Myanmar needs to undertake going forward, particularly in terms of re-engaging with and reintegrating into ASEAN.
The deputy minister also revealed
that Siem Reap and Bagan are Sister Cities. An agreement was reached to
continue promoting their Sister City relationship and to further implement the
“Two Countries, One Destination” initiative. Discussions were also held on
expanding direct air services between the two countries and on promoting trade
in Myanmar’s agricultural and certain industrial products, including their
export to Cambodia.

from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, from Phnom Penh to Bangkok, and from
Bangkok to Dawei Deep-Sea Port, which would provide a direct overland route for
regional countries to access the Indian Ocean.
With regard to border problems, the President said that border issues exist to varying degrees among countries that share borders. The most important thing is to find the best ways to resolve such issues through negotiations and discussions, and then establish joint committees to address them through the most appropriate means. The key message conveyed was that border issues should be resolved peacefully.
In implementing the East-West Corridor, she recounted that the route would involve four countries, running from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Phnom Penh in Cambodia and then to Bangkok. The route can only be implemented once the border issues have been resolved. As the corridor would bring economic, social, diplomatic and cultural benefits, the President urged that the border issues be resolved peacefully and that efforts be made to reach mutually acceptable solutions while taking into account the interests of the region.
