While on a State Visit to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing, currently in Phnom Penh of Cambodia on the State Visit, laid a wreath to pay tribute at the Independence Monument and the memorial bell-shaped pavilion housing a statue depicting late His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk, in Phnom Penh at 3:10 pm local standard time yesterday.
On arrival at the
Independence Monument, the President of Myanmar and his entourage were
cordially welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Mr
Tea Seiha and senior officers.
The President of
Myanmar took the salute of the Guard of Honour. Led by two soldiers who
conveyed a wreath, the President laid the wreath to pay tribute at the
Independence Monument.
At the memorial
bell-shaped pavilion housing a statue depicting the late His Majesty King
Norodom Sihanouk, the President of Myanmar and his party were welcomed by
officials from the Cambodian Ministry of Royal Palace.

The Independence
Monument was constructed in 1958 and inaugurated in 1962 to commemorate
Cambodia’s independence from French rule in 1953. A large statue of His Majesty
King Norodom Sihanouk, the late father of the nation and a leading figure in
the struggle for independence who passed away in 2012, was erected in 2013
beneath a large bell-shaped pavilion in the park east of the Independence
Monument. As part of the diplomatic programmes for visits by foreign heads of
state, wreaths are laid at the Independence Monument in honour of the heroes of
independence, followed separately by a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial
bell-shaped pavilion housing the statue of King Norodom Sihanouk to pay
respects to the late King.
