MNREC designates Namsang as protected public forest

 

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation has announced that 21,933 acres in Namsang Township, Shan State, have been designated as the “Namsang Protected Public Forest” as of 1 September 2026, issued in exercise of the powers conferred by Subsection (e) of Section 6 of the Forest Law promulgated in 2018.

The ministry designates protected public forests and forest reserves to ensure the sustainability of hilly ecosystems, strengthen environmental management, maintain biodiversity, conserve water resources, and prevent the improper extraction of timber, poles, feldspar, and firewood by residents.

The Namsang Protected Public Forest will conserve Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), Thitya, Thitel, Nyan, as well as the watershed area of the Namting Creek, which flows into the Thanlwin river, will be preserved. It will also protect rare wildlife species, including wild boar, vulture, jungle cat, sambar deer, peacock, common moorhen, common hill myna and parrot. In addition, the designation will help improve the ecosystem, support the socioeconomic development of residents, and mitigate climate change.
