ACCORDING to sources close to the family, former Myanmar national football striker Win Aung passed away at the age of 60 at the Aryu Hospital in Yangon at 4:30 pm on 13 September.
He had been receiving medical treatment since early September due to a condition involving fluid in his lungs.
He scored crucial goals in major tournaments such as the 1991 SEA Games, the 1993 SEA Games, the 1994 Asian Games, and the 1996 Tiger Cup. Uniquely for a Myanmar team where headers were rare, he was known for scoring numerous headers.
He won a silver medal at the 1993 SEA Games and secured many domestic championship titles with clubs – the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Finance and Revenue. He played together with other famous players such as Myo Hlaing Win, Than Toe Aung, Tin Myint Aung, and Kyi Lwin.
“He was more like a close brother to me, having played together since we were very young. We have so many memories together. He played his best and scored goals to win many trophies. It is a great loss for football,” said former Myanmar player and coach U Myo Hlaing Win.
Win Aung retired from his playing career at 33, following the 1997 SEA Games. Since then, he has coached young players at local clubs and football academies, and actively participated in various sporting activities.
