Cashew nuts from Palaw, Taninthayi, Kyunsu, and Bokpyin townships in Myeik District, Taninthayi Region, are increasingly supplied to Yangon and Mandalay, from which they are shipped to foreign markets.
There is a good yield in cashew cultivation this year. High demand elevated the price to K60,000 per viss, up from K45,000 per viss registered in the corresponding period last year. The traders forecast a higher price in the upcoming weeks, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.
Cashew nuts are utilized in ice cream, traditional Myanmar snacks (Htoemont), cakes, jam, and biryani. Cashew nut oil is rich in Vitamin E, making it a popular additive in modern cosmetic formulations.
Furthermore, cashew nut shells serve as a valuable industrial raw material, providing a high-energy source of renewable biomass.
Of fruit exports, konjac and cashew nuts topped the list with the highest export volume and earnings in the previous financial year, according to Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association.
Myeik region is the agricultural hub driven by plantations of rubber, cashew nuts, oil palm and areca nuts. This year, areca nut prices are in a downward trend. The areca nut from Taninthayi Region is distributed to other regions and states, especially Yangon and Mandalay Regions. China prefers soft and moist areca nuts rather than dried ones. To cut production costs, many farm owners prefer to sell soft, green, and moist areca nuts during harvest rather than dry them first.
