Japan accounted for 4.38 per cent of Myanmar’s total trade, making it Myanmar’s sixth-largest trading partner, said President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing at the Myanmar-Japan Business Forum at the Myanmar Convention Centre (Yangon) in Mayangon Township, Yangon Region, yesterday.
The forum, jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Association of Myanmar Japan Socio-Economic Development Cooperation, and INGO PEACE of Japan, underscored efforts to deepen bilateral ties and drive comprehensive socioeconomic growth.
The President unveiled the Myanmar-Japan business forum.
Speaking at the forum, President U Min Aung Hlaing reported that Myanmar-Japan bilateral trade totalled US$1,334.8 million in the 2023-2024 financial year, declined to US$1,194.4 million in 2024 -2025, and rebounded to US$1,343.7 million in 2025 -2026, according to official trade statistics.
He noted that in the 2024-2025 financial year, Myanmar’s exports to Japan were valued at US$1,058.6 million, while imports from Japan stood at US$135.8 million. The total bilateral trade between the two countries during that period reached US$1,194.4 million.
The President explained that Myanmar’s major export products to Japan include garments, footwear, pulses and beans, pearls, and electrical equipment. The main import products from Japan are textiles, transport equipment, electrical machinery, machinery and mechanical appliances, and lace and lace fabrics. So, the President expressed his hope that the Myanmar-Japan Business Forum will further promote bilateral trade between Myanmar and Japan to a greater extent than before.
The President noted that Japan has invested billions of dollars across Myanmar’s industrial zones, manufacturing, logistics, energy, and service sectors. He emphasized that contributions from more than 50 Japanese companies account for 29.92 per cent of the Thilawa Special Economic Zone project, representing the largest share of foreign investment.

He added that from 2014 to March 2026, a total of 126 companies from Myanmar and 21 foreign nations, including Japan, invested more than US$2.3 billion in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone.
The President stated that efforts are underway to ensure stability of electricity supply for factories operating within the Thilawa Special Economic Zone and to facilitate smoother, more convenient business operations, including through the provision of One-Stop Service.
He emphasized that Japan is Myanmar’s ninth largest investor, with 127 projects currently underway totalling US$1,869.1 million. Around 300 Japanese companies are operating in the country, while more than 1,500 Japanese nationals reside in Myanmar.
The President welcomes investments in agriculture, livestock breeding and agro-based manufacturing industries, renewable energy production, education and healthcare, as well as technology and digital service businesses.
Japanese investors are also invited to invest in the Yadanabon Cyber City Project in Myanmar’s hilly areas.
The President noted that if Myanmar’s advantages, including its natural resources, agricultural sector, young population, and labour force, are combined with the advanced technologies, capital, management experience, and technical expertise of Japanese businesspeople, a stronger mutually beneficial win-win business environment can be built for both sides.
Mr Nakazawa Hiroyuki, Japan’s INGO PEACE Chair, expressed his delight at the creation of opportunities for future cooperation between the two countries under the Myanmar-Japan bilateral cooperation programme. The Chair expressed hope that Myanmar and Japan would join hands to foster future initiatives endowed with anticipation and prosperity.
The INGO PEACE Chair presented a commemorative gift to the President.
Students from the National University for Arts and Culture (Yangon) danced with a companion to the Japanese song ‘Sakura’.
The President and party visited the exhibition booths at the forum.
Also present at the ceremony were Union ministers, State dignitaries, officials from Japanese companies and organizations as well as Myanmar companies.
