U Myint Thu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Mr. Hong Liang, Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the
Re-public of the Union of Myanmar signed the agreement on the transfer of fund
for the projects under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2018
batch), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the morning of 23rd January
(Wednesday) 2019.
The Permanent Secretaries and Senior Officials from the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and relevant Ministries, and officials from the Embassy of
the Peoples’ Republic of China in Yangon attended the signing ceremony.
China will transfer US$ 7.3 million to Myanmar for 19
projects to be implemented in Myanmar by the eight Ministries in the sectors of
agriculture, water resources, education, research and social security.
China provided USD 2.4 million to Myanmar for 10
Mekong-Lancang Special Fund projects ( 2017 batch ) in the sectors of
agriculture, cultural and connectivity in 2018.
The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation was established by the
initiative of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at the 17th ASEAN-China Summit held in
Myanmar in 2014 to foster cooperation in sustainable development of the Mekong
region.
It is a sub-regional cooperation framework officially
launched in 2016 among six Mekong-Lancang countries comprising Cambodia, China,
Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation primarily focused on five
priority areas, namely; connectivity, production capacity, cross-border
economic cooperation, water resources, and agriculture and poverty reduction.
It has been expanded to other areas such as education, culture and health,
lately.
The Mekong-Lancang Special Fund under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation
framework was established in 2017 in order to provide financial assistance to
the development efforts of six Mekong countries.
