7th SSMN Committee holds 47-member leading committee meeting

The annual meeting of the 47-member leading committee of the 7th State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee was held at the Wizaya Mingalar Dhammathabin Hall on Kaba Aye Hill in Yangon yesterday.

Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Abhidhaja Maharattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhamo Sayadaw, Dr. Bhaddanta Kumarabhivamsa presided over the meeting. In his opening address at the meeting, the Sayadaw called on the members of the committee not to lose sight of the basic principles, mission, vision, and responsibilities set by the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee at the 1980 All-Orders Sangha Conference.
The Sayadaw also reminded the members of the committee’s decision in the previous meeting, which called for establishing new executive committees of nuns, as the 7th SSMNC has not yet received reports on the formation of such committees at the nationwide level. “Those committees should be approved by announcing gazette orders and duties should be assigned to them in accordance with the rules and regulations of the committee. Only then, the flourishing of the Sasana (Teaching of the Buddha) would be accomplished through the efforts of the nuns.” Speaking at the meeting, the Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture, Thura U Aung Ko, asked the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee to instruct region, state, and township Sangha committees to enforce rules to prevent actions that tarnish the image of the Sangha organization.
At yesterday’s meeting, the members of the committee discussed the code of conduct, religious affairs, and educational affairs, and decided on issues.
