Union Minister surveys plantation, conservation work in Pathein Tsp


UNION Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Ohn Win, visited the Forest Department in Pathein Township, Ayeyawady Region on 24 November, and heard a report on work conducted by the department in 2018-2019.

During the meeting, the Union Minister spoke on the need to strictly observe the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Forest Department, take responsibility and supervise work position-wise, apply systematic reforestation methods, and report findings.
The Union Minister and his team visited a forest plantation on the Thalutkhwa reserve and looked into their requirements. They also visited a 200-acre plantation of Pyingodoe trees, inspected a 25-acre section for producing seeds on the Chaungtha reserve, and private elephant camps in Pathein Township. Officials presented a report on establishing a grazing ground for elephants, provision of social needs for mahouts and their families, and the number of people visiting the camps. The Union Minister later looked into the requirements of a community-based mangrove forest conservation project conducted by the Myanmar Forest Association (MFA), with the cooperation of Ramsar Center Japan (RCJ) and financial aid from Toyota Environmental Grant.
He toured the area where 1,800 acres of mangrove trees are being planted and conserved in Pathein Township. Officials presented a report on conservation of rare tree species and progress of work to the minister. Afterwards, U Ohn Win planted a sapling in the area.
