Elevating medical doctors’ professional competence

The Government is actively accelerating the implementation of healthcare services to ensure that every citizen enjoys good health and physical fitness and can live to their full life expectancy. Ensuring the health and fitness of the entire population is a fundamental requirement for building a modern and developed democratic nation.

Furthermore, efforts are being made to ensure that everyone has access to healthcare services, regardless of whether they live in urban or rural areas or their economic status. The current life expectancy of Myanmar’s population is 69 years, and healthcare services are being vigorously supported and implemented with the aim of increasing life expectancy to over 70 years by 2030.

It is extremely important to have an adequate supply of skilled healthcare personnel to ensure the overall effectiveness and proper functioning of the healthcare system. To promote the health and physical fitness of the entire population and improve the standard of healthcare, sufficient healthcare human resources must be developed and trained to ensure that healthcare services are accessible to everyone. In 2023, the Faculty of Medicine was additionally established at Naypyitaw State Academy. As a result, Myanmar now has a total of 17 universities, comprising six medical universities and 11 universities specializing in medical-related fields.

Newly qualified doctors must continually improve their knowledge and professional skills. When treating patients, they must act with goodwill and compassion, providing care with a family spirit and treating patients as they would their own parents, siblings and relatives.

In addition, they must strictly observe medical ethics and attach importance to listening to patients, clearly explaining medical conditions and treatment to patients and their families, safeguarding patients’ personal information and confidentiality, and respecting their dignity. They must strive to become good, responsible and patient-centred doctors who uphold the dignity of their profession and earn the trust of the State.

While the State is working to ensure an adequate supply of healthcare personnel, doctors must also strive to become medical professionals who are not only sufficient in number but also highly qualified and well-rounded in every aspect. Providing healthcare to each individual also means safeguarding the future of an entire family. They must make the best use of their knowledge and compassion for the benefit of the public and strive to become capable doctors whom the State can rely on and trusted healthcare professionals whom the public can place their confidence in.
