Strive to raise the literacy rate and educated individuals

THE campaign to develop libraries and raise reading habits took place in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory through collaborative efforts of the government and well-wishers to establish libraries at different levels in order to widen the scope of people.

A library plays a crucial role in broadening people’s horizons and accumulating knowledge in society. In so doing, the Myanmar Libraries Development Cooperation Committee manages the repairing and reopening of libraries and the construction of new libraries to raise the literacy rate of the people.

The Department of Information and Public Relations under the Ministry of Information runs 410 libraries in districts and townships, and the Myanmar Libraries Foundation, organizations, and well-wishers operate more than 3,500 libraries. Thanks to libraries and school education, Myanmar’s literacy rate scored 92 per cent according to the 2019 interim census. Most of the people have only primary school education, but most of them are beyond school age. As such, it is necessary to create chances for them to have knowledge and techniques for their livelihoods.

Myanmar needs to turn out well-versed human resources as a must for building a society that will have success in its national vision and keep abreast of other countries. All developed countries encourage the education sector. As such, countries with educated citizens can establish a political system.

Practically, political controversies can be solved through political ways and means, but countries with a lack of educated citizens may face conflicts. As such, it is necessary to raise the literacy campaign for all to increase the number of literate citizens. If so, the whole country will have a large number of educated citizens to handle any measures to achieve success.

On 9 May, well-wishers donated K2,205 million and 70,780 books and publications to 147 libraries for the construction of new library buildings and the repair and reopening of some libraries. On 10 April, more than K12,762 billion and 85,540 books and publications were also donated for the development of libraries across the nation. Such an act aims to raise the literacy rate and educate citizens.

Although people can read literature in online media, they need to choose the literature that is beneficial for their lives due to the influence of toxic information. Primarily, school libraries must be opened and upgraded to create a reading environment for students. Only when different libraries keep books and publications will rural people and students have reading opportunities.
