The
Htein Bin garbage dump fire in Hlinethaya Township, Yangon Region has been
officially declared under control, but will remain under surveillance for heat
emissions, officials said yesterday.
U
Myint Oo, Head of Yangon Region’s Northern District Fire Service Department,
said they withdrew fire department and YCDC personnel in the afternoon after a
last surveillance patrol deemed the situation was under control. “We are
handing over to the YCDC fire department to continue with any necessary
investigations,” said U Myint Oo.
The
YCDC fire department will continue surveillance with four fire engines in the
area. Saw Soe Soe Myint, Head of the YCDC fire department, said they will
continue surveillance operations for an indefinite period, but added that the
situation is firmly under control.
The
Htein Bin garbage dump was first designated as a landfill in 2001 and since
then has seen 2,500 tons of waste disposed each day at the site. Spanning 300 acres,
the fire that broke out on the afternoon of 20 April covered a hundred acres
and was extinguished using water and biofoam with the combined efforts of the
fire department, military and other relevant department personnel.
