 June 4, 2017
Art competitions commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking were held in Maungtaw No. 1 Basic Education High School yesterday with students from Maungtaw and Buthidaung townships competing.

Maung Than Htay Hlaing, a 10th grader at No. 1 Basic Education High School in Maungtaw, said education and information on the danger of drugs is important because drug usage is rising and becoming a big threat to youths in the region.

The art competition was held using mottos and slogans such as “Resist the danger of drug to prevent destruction of human world”, “A drug-free country develops and grows”, “Resist drugs and raise the honour of the people through sports”, “A healthy and durable human world eliminates drugs” and “Help and assist drug addicts while acting against dealers for the country”.

Entries for the competition included cartoons, posters and computer drawings.

Police Captain Maung Maung Yin of Anti-narcotics Task Force No. 46 said educational events were held in the Maungtaw district annually to educate students about the danger of drugs.

The art, cartoon, poster and computer drawing competitions were held to commemorate in advance the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking that falls on 26 June. Informative and educational talks about the danger of drugs will also be carried out in schools and wards, added the police captain.

It is learnt from the Maungtaw district education office that 16 students from basic education high schools, middle schools and post primary schools in Maungtaw and Buthidaung townships competed in the art, cartoon, poster and computer drawing competitions.
