Press release regarding assassination of U Ko Ni

1. U Ko Ni, legal adviser of National League for Democracy, was assassinated at 5 pm on 29th January at Yangon International Airport upon return from Indonesia via Singapore.
He attended the senior leadership programme held in Indonesia from 22nd to 29th January. He was shot in the head by a pistol from a very close distance. He died at the scene of attack. A taxi driver called U Ne Win also lost his life in helping the security troops arrest the assassin namely U Kyi Lin, 53.
2. We are overwhelmed with sorrow over the death of U Ko Ni and U Ne Win. We are specially grateful to U Ne Win and all duty-conscientious people for helping arrest the assailant.
3. The initial interrogation indicates the intention to destabilize the state. Investigations are being carried out by the government to find out the truth. Security has been heightened in the aftermath of the assassination.
4. This being so, people are requested not to be stricken by panic and to stay quietly and peacefully, to be careful of religious and racial incitements and inform authorities concerned in case of finding evidence concerning this case of assassination and actions aimed at destabilizing the state.
