Fabricated stories, misleading pictures about Rakhine cause global criticism

January 2, 2017
The government yesterday placed heavy blame on fabricated stories and incorrectly captioned pictures for causing major misunderstandings about Myanmar to the rest of the world.

The fake news posted on social media of events purporting to have occurred in Myanmar but actually happening in other places began to circulate in earnest after the 9 October attacks in Maungtaw, northern Rakhine State, resulting in criticism and condemnation of Myanmar by countries and rights groups across the globe, according to the State Counsellor’s Office Information Committee, which issued a press release yesterday.
“Such intentionally fabricated news and photos were sent to international media, international human rights organisations and governments in an attempt to cause misunderstandings about Myanmar,” the information committee said.
The following are some of the false items used by media about Myanmar, according to the information committee.
