Union
Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Myint Htwe emphasized the need to conduct
nationwide prevention measures from diabetes, during a speech he gave at the
marking of World Diabetes Day in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday.
Latest
data shows that around 382 million people globally have diabetes. 4.8 million
people have died in 2012 because of the disease.
In
Myanmar, the Union Minister said over 1.7 million people aged 20 to 79 have
diabetes, with forecasts suggesting this number may climb to 2 million.
The
Union Minister also encouraged promotion of school health activities, in
cooperation with development partners, organizations, and the public, to further
educate people about the risks and prevention of diabetes.
The
World Diabetes Day is annually celebrated worldwide every 14th of November.
