A draft decision has been submitted to inscribe the practice of Thanaka culture in Myanmar, a traditional cultural heritage of Myanmar, on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, according to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum.
Under
the draft decision, the committee assessed that the Thanaka nomination meets
the specified criteria. Key points are broken down into (R1) Daily life and
transmission: Thanaka represents balance, care and unity in practitioners’
daily lives and plays a major role in religious festivals and social
activities.
Knowledge
and skills are passed down within families, and training and cultural
programmes also support transmission; (R2) Visibility and awareness:
Inscription would promote greater understanding of Thanaka’s cultural, social
and traditional essence, strengthen the transmission of knowledge to young
people, and bolster environmental conservation and community unity; (R3)
Safeguarding efforts: Communities, practitioners, growers, sellers, educational
institutions and government departments are working together to safeguard
Thanaka culture through educational programs, community festivals and media;
(R4) Broad participation: The nomination was prepared through a national survey
and workshops involving social organizations, cultural associations and people
from various regions, with free, prior and informed consent obtained from
stakeholders; (R5) Inventorying: Thanaka culture has been included in Myanmar’s
National Intangible Cultural Heritage List since March 2020, and the Department
of Archaeology and National Museum under the Ministry of Culture, Hotels and
Tourism updates the list every two years.
Continued
efforts are being exerted to inscribe Myanmar’s Thanaka culture on the list, a
significant step toward raising the value of Myanmar’s cultural heritage on the
world stage.
