THE Yangon Region Road Safety Council has announced that, starting on 12 October, action will be taken against pedestrians who fail to use designated crossing points in Yangon’s municipal areas.
Pedestrians
are required to cross roads using designated facilities, including pedestrian
underpasses, footbridges, zebra crossings, and other officially authorized
crossing points within the municipal area. Those who fail to comply with these
regulations will face strict legal action under Section 96 of the 2020 Road
Safety and Motor Vehicle Management Law.
“We
have already conducted an awareness campaign to educate pedestrians on using
designated zebra crossings, footbridges, and pedestrian underpasses. Starting
today, enforcement measures will be implemented. Enforcement teams will monitor
footbridges and carry out inspections and penalties on a rotating basis.
Crossing the road underneath a footbridge when one is available is not only a
violation of traffic regulations but also poses serious dangers to both
pedestrians and vehicles. Such accidents have occurred in the past. These
measures are being taken to protect people’s lives. Although we cannot yet
specify when the enforcement campaign will end, there are plans to increase the
number of enforcement teams,” said Police Captain Moe Win of the Traffic Police
Task Force in Kyauktada Township.
To
ensure the safety of both the public and road users, the Yangon Region Traffic
Police Corps 2 and traffic police units in respective townships had previously
conducted an awareness campaign, urging pedestrians to use zebra crossings and
footbridges. Following this educational period, the enforcement phase
officially begins on 12 October.
In
Yangon, pedestrian footbridges at Sule, Pansodan, Botahtaung Pagoda, Sangyoung
Maha Myine, Hledan, Bogyoke Market, and Kaba Aye Pagoda are frequently used by
large numbers of commuters every day. Crossing roads beneath these footbridges
has often contributed to traffic congestion and accidents involving pedestrians
and vehicles. To prevent such incidents, individuals who violate the designated
crossing regulations will face fines imposed by a judge at the Traffic Offences
Court located on Bogalezay Street in Botahtaung Township.
