Myanmar delegates attend 9th AIMMAF

 

THE 9th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry, hosted by India, was held in New Delhi on 9 September, with a Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung in attendance.

During the meeting, ASEAN and Indian agriculture and forestry ministers exchanged views and discussed possible solutions and policy directions for ensuring food security and strengthening agricultural supply chains amid growing global uncertainties, in line with the statement adopted at the 46th ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) Meeting on 29 April 2026.

The Union minister also discussed practical measures to strengthen resilience against the impacts of geopolitical and economic developments, climate-related disruptions, and instability in energy, transport, food and agricultural input markets. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining smooth and uninterrupted supply chains through enhanced cooperation.

The meeting also discussed and adopted the draft Joint Statement of the 9th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry.

 The participants agreed to hold the 10th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam in 2028, with the date and time to be communicated to member states through the ASEAN Secretariat.

Following the meeting, the Myanmar delegation met with India’s Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to discuss bilateral cooperation in agriculture, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation between the two countries and an MoU on academic cooperation and exchange between Assam Don Bosco University and relevant Myanmar institutions.

They also discussed five technical proposals for cooperation submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation during the visit of India’s Foreign Secretary to Myanmar in December 2021, as well as technical cooperation in the development of dairy cattle farming.

The Myanmar delegation also held discussions with agriculture and forestry ministers from ASEAN member states and India, officials and researchers from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and private-sector agricultural entrepreneurs.

 As part of the study programme, the Myanmar delegation visited agricultural research facilities in India, where they observed modern greenhouse and soilless cultivation technologies, high-yield crop research fields including black gram and Basmati rice, an advanced plant phenotyping research centre, and a seed bank preserving the genetic resources of various plant species.
