Flood relief and rescue efforts are continuing in Laymyethna, Hinthada, Yekyi, Ngathainggyoung, Kyonpyaw and Kyaunggon townships and surrounding villages in Ayeyawady Region.
On
the night of 30 July 2026, heavy rainfall and riverbank erosion caused a breach
in the Ngawun River embankment, resulting in flooding. As of today, floodwaters
have affected 19 urban wards and surrounding villages across the affected
townships.
To
assist flood victims, temporary relief camps have been opened. Tatmadaw members
of the South-West Command, members of the Myanmar Police Force, Fire Services
Department, social rescue organizations, volunteer groups and residents are
working together to conduct search and rescue operations, help evacuate people
and belongings to safer locations, distribute food and essential supplies, and
provide necessary healthcare services to affected communities.
At
the same time, efforts are underway to prevent further riverbank erosion and
embankment damage by placing sandbags along vulnerable sections, constructing
water-retarding structures, and reinforcing the embankment with additional
earth.
Officials
from the South-West Command visited the affected areas to inspect the ongoing
rescue and rehabilitation operations, encourage personnel on the ground, and
coordinate additional assistance as required.
