Floods inundate 106 villages in Laymyethna

 

Heavy rain and riverbank erosion triggered flooding across Laymyethna Township in Ayeyawady Region, inundating 106 villages and prompting ongoing rescue and relief operations, authorities said.

Floodwaters entered five wards in Laymyethna town, major roads and 72 surrounding villages after a weakened embankment along the Ngawun River gave way, allowing water to flow through a breached sand channel. The flooding also affected 26 villages in Hinthada Township, six in Yekyi Township and two in Kyonpyaw Township.

Authorities have opened 13 relief camps, while security personnel, police, firefighters, rescue organizations, volunteers and residents are evacuating affected families, delivering food and providing medical assistance.

Emergency crews are also reinforcing embankments with sandbags, constructing water barriers and carrying out earthworks to prevent further erosion and flooding. Officials continue to monitor the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
