Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker addresses capacity-building training for MPs

PYITHU Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi addressed the capacity-building training for Hluttaw representatives of the Public Accounts Committee yesterday.

The Speaker emphasized that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is a vital Hluttaw standing committee that significantly enhances lawmaker capacity. He urged participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge to strengthen the role and legislative effectiveness of the Hluttaw.

The Speaker said the Public Accounts Committee is one of Hluttaw’s most important standing committees, responsible for strengthening public financial management and promoting good governance. He stressed that Hluttaw has a fundamental duty to oversee public finances, ensure the efficient use of public funds and prevent waste, noting that the committee’s success should be measured by improved government financial management and greater public benefit.

He also mentioned the role of the committee in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance, value for money, and the fundamental principle of performance audit.

The Speaker urged Public Accounts Committee members to strengthen their understanding of audit reports, budgeting and financial management, saying the committee’s recommendations should support national development and reform. He added that the training would enhance Hluttaw oversight and financial governance, and protecting public funds is essential to strengthening the Hluttaw, promoting good governance and supporting the country’s long-term development.

U Thurein Zaw (Kawkareik Constituency), Chairman of the First Pyithu Hluttaw Public Accounts Committee and former Deputy Minister for National Planning and Finance, delivered a lecture.

Later that morning, the Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker accepted a book donation from retired Taninthayi Region Advocate-General U Ohn Than and presented a certificate of honour in return.
