Myanmar Targets $1B Rice Export Windfall

 

MYANMAR expects to generate over US$1.179 billion from rice and broken rice exports in the 2026-2027 financial year (from 1 April to 31 March).

Myanmar aims to achieve export targets of 1.8 million tonnes of rice and 1.2 million tonnes of broken rice through sea and border trade routes this FY, totalling three million tonnes.

Myanmar shipped over 529,000 tonnes of rice and broken rice in the first quarter (April-June), bagging $167 million, according to Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF).

Rice export volume was registered at 169,559 tonnes ($51 million) in April, 136,262 tonnes ($42 million) in May and 223,714 tonnes ($74 million) in June. There is no rice export through border checkpoints so far this FY.

The Ministry of Commerce is jointly drafting the National Export Strategy (2026-2030) with private and governmental institutions to boost trade, maximize foreign revenue, penetrate more potential foreign markets and support the export promotion sector.

Myanmar’s rice export in the financial year 2025-2026 (April-March) exceeded 2.7 million tonnes, bagging US$861 million, MRF’s data showed. Myanmar generated income of over $1.129 billion from 2.48 million tonnes of rice and broken rice exports in the financial year 2024-2025 (April-March).

Ministry of Commerce is working together with the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Rice Federation, Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association, Myanmar Industries Association, Myanmar Rubber Planters and Producers Association, Myanmar Fisheries Products Processors and Exporters Association to meet monthly export targets and facilitate exports.
