DEPUTY Minister for Defence Maj-Gen Aung Myo Thant, who is also Chairman of the Committee on Myanmar-Thailand Transboundary Haze Pollution Prevention, presided over the second coordination meeting of the committee in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
During the
meeting, the participants reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of measures
implemented to prevent transboundary haze pollution during the 2026 dry season
and discussed future action plans.
The
ministries concerned discussed preparations to reduce haze during the 2027 dry
season because, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology,
moderate El Niño
conditions began in July 2026 and could intensify into a strong El Niño event by the end of the year. As
this may lead to higher temperatures and an increased risk of forest fires. The
fire hotspots declined from 50,512 cases during the first six months of the
baseline year, 2024, to 44,931 cases during the same period in 2026,
representing a reduction of 5,581 hotspots, or 11 per cent.
