Censuses, surveys, and statistical systems fundamental for future policy formulation

Population change is a challenge for the country, but it can also be an opportunity to strategically reshape the nation’s future, said Vice-President U Nyo Saw at the ceremony to mark World Population Day 2026 at the Jade Hall of the Myanmar International Convention Centre I (MICC I)in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-President said that population change is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations.

He noted that the effective implementation of poverty reduction, improved health, access to quality education, gender equality, the creation of decent employment opportunities, and the strengthening of social protection systems can only be achieved through a thorough understanding of population structure and population change-related data.

The Vice-President underscored that it is essential to carefully analyze and take into consideration the current population situation, future population projections, and regional variations in population distribution in strategically pursuing national development.

He spotted that censuses, surveys, and statistical systems are fundamental and critically important sources of information for future policy formulation, determining investment priorities, improving public services, and developing and implementing local development plans.

He urged officials from the government departments, development partners, experts, social organizations, and the entire public to work together to build a fair, hopeful, and strong socioeconomic community that is centred on human dignity, based on rights, and ensures equal opportunities.

Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing reported on the population change in Myanmar.

An animation clip to mark the 2026 World Population Day was screened.

After the ceremony, the Vice-President and party visited the booths to mark the 2026 World Population Day at the Jade Hall.

Also present at the ceremony were Vice-President Nan Ni Ni Aye, Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi, Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker U Aung Lin Dwe, Union-level dignitaries, Union ministers, the Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman, deputy ministers, diplomats from the foreign embassies based in Myanmar, representatives of UN agencies and guests.
