Myanmar President, Chinese Premier hold talks on trade, energy and border cooperation

 

President U Min Aung Hlaing met Chinese Premier Mr Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing yesterday afternoon during his State Visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Mr Xi Jinping.

Chinese Premier Mr Li Qiang welcomed the Myanmar delegation and reaffirmed China’s longstanding support for Myanmar. He expressed confidence that Myanmar would achieve greater unity and development under the President’s leadership and said both sides should deepen bilateral ties, strengthen friendship and work together for regional peace and prosperity.

President U Min Aung Hlaing described the visit as an important opportunity to further strengthen the traditional friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries. He said the discussions would help expand cooperation in trade, investment, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges for the mutual benefit of both nations.

The President noted that Myanmar and China have maintained close “Pauk-Phaw” relations based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and said bilateral ties had now reached the level of a deeper shared community with a common future. The friendship and cooperation between the two countries have become a role model in the international relations arena.

He said that while China is currently implementing its 15th Five-Year Plan, Myanmar’s new government is also intensifying efforts to achieve lasting domestic peace and national development. He noted that the government is prioritizing stronger economic cooperation with strategic partner countries to promote sustainable and balanced growth. He added that he was confident the positive outcomes of the day’s discussions would be translated into practical cooperation and effectively implemented for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Premier Mr Li Qiang said China and Myanmar should continue practical cooperation across a wide range of sectors, expand trade, protect the interests of their peoples and work towards the early reopening of border trade routes. He also emphasized the need to implement the memoranda of understanding and agreements signed during the visit.

During the talks, the two leaders exchanged views on enhancing cooperation in all sectors, reopening border trade Posts and improving the lawful management of border trade. They also discussed increasing Chinese technical support for quarantine standards for Myanmar’s agricultural and MSME products, strengthening cross-border law enforcement cooperation, and expanding strategic collaboration.

Other key topics included Chinese assistance in building a stable energy system and renewable energy capacity in Myanmar, continued support for reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts following the Mandalay earthquake, and accelerating implementation of projects under the Myanmar-China Economic Corridor.

The meeting was also attended by members of the Myanmar delegation Union Ministers U Khin Maung Yi, U Tin Maung Swe, Dr Kan Zaw, U Ko Ko Lwin, Dr Charlie Than and U Tun Ohn, Kachin State Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan, Shan State Chief Minister U Sai Htein Soe, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, deputy ministers, Myanmar Ambassador to China U Zaw Win Myint, and other officials.

Joining Premier Li Qiang were Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ms Ma Jia and Chinese government officials.
