New Year wishes of literati for 2026

U Myat Thu

(Tekkatho Myat Thu)

Myanmar’s traditional New Year falls in the month of Tagu, but this New Year is the global New Year. A New Year signifies leaving the old behind and moving forward toward renewal. At this New Year moment, the State is moving forward by holding a major election that carefully implements the democratic system. The people themselves are actively participating with awareness and casting their votes to obtain democratically legitimate representatives for the country. No matter what anyone says, the majority of the public can see the truth clearly. Having come to understand who is constructive and who is destructive, a new democratic State will emerge. In other words, a people’s democratic government chosen and implemented by the people themselves will come to power and work to advance the country.

Myanmar is rich in water and land. The country possesses a wide variety of mineral resources underground and underwater. Ninety per cent of the jade traded worldwide comes from Myanmar. The reason other countries cannot match Myanmar pearls as Myanmar has favourable natural conditions, both on land and in water. Although the country is rich in precious resources, it has yet to become an “Asian tiger” because unity and peace are still needed. Economically developed countries are referred to as Asian tigers. If we achieve unity and peace, our country will not be a small tiger nation; it will certainly become a large tiger nation. So why would anyone abandon a country that is destined to become a great, large tiger nation? Therefore, in the New Year, everyone needs to work together in unity and cooperation.

“Mingala” means cutting off and removing all wrongdoings. The activities abandoning all bad deeds and practising good deeds truly mean Mingala. The New Year is a time for bad things to fade away and for good things to arrive. Myanmar can become a golden land, a ruby land. On the day when people come to understand and reject attempts by others to incite hatred and instigation, and on the day when we all stand united in recognizing that this is our land and our country, the nation will advance rapidly. On this auspicious New Year, may Myanmar achieve remarkable development and become a great ruby nation where democracy flourishes abundantly. May everyone be healthy and prosperous, safe from harm, free from worry and anxiety, free from poverty, and blessed with many forms of happiness and well-being. I send these New Year wishes to all.

U Ohn Maung

(Myinmu Maung Naing Moe, Chairman, Myanmar Writers Association)

I am deeply pleased and honoured to be able to extend greetings and auspicious messages at this New Year period. In our country, the government, ethnic nationalities, and all the people have already carried out, during the past year, the tasks that needed to be done and were worth doing. We also worked together in unity to address all the issues that arose for the nation. We endured the natural disasters we encountered, and thanks to the State’s oversight and efforts to help rebuild our country and our people, reconstruction and progress have been achieved. In order to move toward a democratic State, systematic and appropriate measures have also been implemented to the necessary extent. There are still further plans and tasks that remain to be carried out.
As such, I would like to urge all ethnic peoples and citizens, together with national leaders and authorities to renew our determination and work hand in hand so that our country may continue in the years ahead to become a united, peaceful, and developed nation. Let us strive to ensure the enduring stability of the nation’s religious heritage, cultural heritage, and territorial integrity. May all the people enjoy happiness and peace of mind and body.

Writer Maung Swe Thet (Colonel Nyunt Swe – Retired)

We, the people, have now cast our votes. Whoever it may be, we believe that the person chosen will work for the benefit of the country. We believe that the person elected is someone who can contribute positively to their respective region, to the nation as a whole, and to the wider world. We voted because we believe that the person we selected will not serve the interests of an individual, but will act for the benefit of everyone. This, too, is an auspicious message.

Citizens of every nation and people around the world all wish for peace and stability in their own countries. Likewise, the people of Myanmar also wish for peace in their country. If our country is peaceful, and all neighbouring and related countries are likewise peaceful, then the world as a whole will also be peaceful. Therefore, may the world be at peace, may Myanmar be at peace, and may all the people enjoy peace and tranquillity. I send my prayers and goodwill that countries across the region may equally share in peace and harmony.

Dr Tin Tun Oo

(Chairman, Myanmar Press Council)

At this moment, we are entering the beginning of 2026, a New Year filled with many auspicious blessings. In our country, the people have struggled through various hardships, including the extremely powerful Mandalay earthquake that struck in March 2025. However, despite facing many kinds of disasters and difficulties, the people did not lose heart. With the strong spirit of “rising again after falling”, we persevered and were able to recover, survive, and stand back up once more.

As a New Year’s message, I would like to say that in striving to resolve such difficulties, we will be able to discover opportunities. Hardships, problems, challenges, and even failures are, in fact, the pathways to growth, development, and success. There are also opportunities. If we turn the outcomes of confronting and overcoming difficulties into opportunities, and continue to strive tirelessly with perseverance, diligence, and determination in line with our goals, we will surely be able to reach our destination of success. Difficulties themselves are opportunities for achievement.

At present, a nationwide multiparty democratic general election is being held in our country, and before long, a Hluttaw composed of people’s representatives chosen by the public will emerge. From there, a new government will also be formed. At that time, it is hoped that the country’s peace, political, economic, and social conditions will further improve and develop. In the near future, a “stronger and better future” will take shape for the nation and its people.

Our Myanmar Press Council will also strive to ensure that the news media sector can fully develop and establish itself as the fourth estate of the nation, helping the media industry grow and progress further. In addition, we affirm that the news media sector will make every possible effort to serve the interests of the country and the people.

At this auspicious beginning of the New Year, I wish that throughout the year all citizens may enjoy physical and mental well-being, that they remain safe from all dangers and disasters; and that all their heartfelt desires may be fulfilled. I also wish for the entire Union of Myanmar to be peaceful, stable, prosperous, and modernly developed, and may the Union endure forever with lasting strength and stability.
