27 groups seek party status; 19 approved

ACCORDING to the Union Election Commission, a total of 27 groups have so far submitted applications to establish political parties by specifying their proposed party names.

Of these, 19 groups have been approved to form political parties. Among them, the Zomi National Party, led by U Thang Shin Khine, applied yesterday for official party registration under Section 7 of the Political Parties Registration Law within the 30 days allowed after receiving the formation approval.

Out of the approved parties, 14 have already been granted official registration. The Union Election Commission is currently reviewing the remaining applications for further registration approvals.
