Indian Ambassador inspects KMMTTC project in Sittway

Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Abhay Thakur, accompanied by Shri Sunil Mukundan, Managing Director of India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL), officials of the Embassy of India, Yangon and the Consulate- General of India, Sittway, visited Sittway in Rakhine State on 16-17 January.

During the visit, the Ambassador visited the Sittway Port of the Government of India-assisted Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Corridor (KMMTTC) Project. The Sittway Port has handled more than 150 vessels, carrying cargoes of food, agriculture commodities, medicines, fuel, vehicles, construction materials, machinery and equipment, since its inauguration in May 2023.

The ambassador also met with Rakhine State Chief Minister U Htein Lin and discussed the matters related to bilateral development cooperation, capacity building and humanitarian assistance under the Rakhine State Development Programmes, meeting the local needs and priorities of the people of Rakhine State.

The two sides agreed that the Sittway Port, an India-Myanmar Friendship Project, will help strengthen coastal, regional and international connectivity, as well as enhance travel and tourism, particularly in the context of the age-old civilizational and people-to-people connection between the two countries, in coming years.

The ambassador highlighted the importance of an early return to peace and stability, which would pave the way for exploiting the full potential of the KMMTTC project.

He then visited the Sri Sri Moha Dev Bari Temple in Sittway and met with members of the Indian-origin community. He informed them of consular services for PIOs and support for strengthening their links with India.
