Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Abhay Thakur, accompanied by Shri Sunil Mukundan, Managing Director of India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL), officials of the Embassy of India, Yangon and the Consulate- General of India, Sittway, visited Sittway in Rakhine State on 16-17 January.
During the
visit, the Ambassador visited the Sittway Port of the Government of
India-assisted Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Corridor (KMMTTC) Project.
The Sittway Port has handled more than 150 vessels, carrying cargoes of food,
agriculture commodities, medicines, fuel, vehicles, construction materials,
machinery and equipment, since its inauguration in May 2023.
The
ambassador also met with Rakhine State Chief Minister U Htein Lin and discussed
the matters related to bilateral development cooperation, capacity building and
humanitarian assistance under the Rakhine State Development Programmes, meeting
the local needs and priorities of the people of Rakhine State.
The two
sides agreed that the Sittway Port, an India-Myanmar Friendship Project, will
help strengthen coastal, regional and international connectivity, as well as
enhance travel and tourism, particularly in the context of the age-old
civilizational and people-to-people connection between the two countries, in
coming years.
The
ambassador highlighted the importance of an early return to peace and
stability, which would pave the way for exploiting the full potential of the
KMMTTC project.
He then
visited the Sri Sri Moha Dev Bari Temple in Sittway and met with members of the
Indian-origin community. He informed them of consular services for PIOs and
support for strengthening their links with India.
