ACCORDING to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative based in Vienna, U Min Thein, addressed the nation’s ongoing efforts to combat online scams and collaborate internationally at the 12th conference of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), held in Vienna from 14 to 18 October.
Ambassador U Min Thein emphasised Myanmar’s commitment to protocols and UNTOC, which the country joined in 2004, the ASEAN Convention against Trafficking in Persons (ACTIP), and the COMMIT Memorandum of Understanding. He acknowledged the growing issue of online scams and gambling in the region, prompting the Myanmar government to take action and foster collaboration with international partners.
The representative also highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about the risks associated with online scams. He called for stronger cooperation across sectors and the need for international support in providing advanced technology and capacity-building initiatives. This would facilitate improved cooperation and information sharing to counter transnational organised crime. Myanmar reaffirmed its dedication to combating such crimes and expressed its willingness to further collaborate with the UNODC and other global partners.
