Ambassador U Soe Lynn Han of Myanmar to Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the EU, as well as the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), expressed Myanmar’s interest in greater participation in the organization’s international cooperation and assistance programs, as well as training courses implemented under Article XI of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), during the 107th Session of the Executive Council Meeting of the OPCW (EC-107) on 11 October.
In his
statement delivered at the event held at the OPCW Headquarters in The Hague,
the Netherlands, from 8 to 11 October 2024, the Ambassador of Myanmar
reiterated the country’s full commitment to the principles and objectives of
the CWC, expressing support for the OPCW’s efforts to create a world free of
chemical weapons.
He
emphasized Myanmar’s belief in the importance of effectively implementing the
CWC for global peace and security while also welcoming the OPCW Technical
Secretariat’s ongoing research into AI challenges.
In the
meeting, participants discussed the progress of the OPCW’s efforts to eliminate
chemical weapons in coordination with relevant state parties, measures to
prevent the threats posed by chemical weapons, the implementation of Articles
VII and XI of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), counter-terrorism
initiatives involving the use of chemical weapons, and the progress of research
undertaken by the OPCW Technical Secretariat on the potential and challenges of
using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enforcing the CWC.
