Myanmar citizens residing in Thailand donate instant noodles, Disaster Management Centre established

 


THE low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea persists. It is likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm and is likely to move towards Myanmar. Therefore, the disaster response mechanisms have been activated under the lead of the National Disaster Management Committee.

In doing so, Myanmar citizens in Thailand donated 1,077,263 baht worth of 158,640 packs of instant noodles for those who are likely to face the storm in Myanmar with the participation of the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand. The donation ceremony was held at the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday. The donated items arrived in Yangon yesterday afternoon and the director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over them to the MoSWRR Union Minister and director of the Disaster Management Department of Yangon Region. Then, the deputy minister for Foreign Affairs on behalf of the donors donated the items to the Union minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. Then, the Union minister gave a certificate of honour in return.

Officials will allocate 30,000 packs of noodles each to Rakhine State and Ayeyawady Region in advance and the remaining will be kept at the central warehouse of the Yangon Region Disaster Management Department and delivered to other places.

Then, National Disaster Management Working Committee Chair Union Minister Dr Thet Thet Khine presided over a coordination meeting on emergency response and management measures of the DMC on the same afternoon at the DMC.

During the meeting, the Union minister said the low-pressure area is likely to become a cyclonic storm and enter Myanmar according to the weather forecast of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. Therefore, the National Disaster Management Committee Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister organized an emergency meeting on 6 May and laid down the proper procedures. The standing order 2022 states emergency management. The DMC is established to carry out the emergency response promptly. The Union minister proposed that the NDMC Secretary serve as the DMC leader, the MoSWRR deputy minister as the deputy leader, personnel of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) Office as the secretary and the director-general of the Disaster Management Department as joint secretary. The DMC will run 24 hours and there will be a meeting at 3 pm every day to manage proper measures as quickly as possible.

Then, the NDMC secretary MoSWRR deputy minister and representatives of the working committees discussed the establishment of DMC and working processes.

He will also lead the DMC and secretaries of 12 working committees under NDMC, military personnel of the Ministry of Defence and offices of the Commanders-in-Chief (Army, Navy and Air) and relevant officials will work together by cooperating with regional and state disaster management teams under the guidance of the NDMC Chairman.
