Union Education Minister attends Education World Forum in London

Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, the Union Minister for Education, left for London by flight from Yangon on 19 January to attend the Education World Forum.

On 20 January, the Union Minister visited the Myanmar Embassy in London and met with staff and young people who are on internship or scholarship in the UK. They discussed the role of young people in transforming and developing the education sector in Myanmar.

On 21 January, the Union Minister attended the ASEAN Minister Breakfast held at The Cinnamon Club located in the former Westminster Library and hosted by Nadhim Zahawi, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families.

Afterwards, the Union Minister attended the Education World Forum at the Queen Elizabeth II Center and then joined the EWF Reception hosted by the Rt Hon. Penny Mordaunt, the Secretary of State for International Development, at the Lancaster House later in the evening.

During the forum, the Union Minister engaged in discussions with officials from Cambridge Assessment English, McGraw-Hill Education, and other organizations.

On 22 January, the Union Minister led the discussions on ‘Ministerial Exchange B: Extending Teaching and Learning Opportunity’, where he explained Myanmar’s education reforms. He attended a dinner hosted by the Irrawaddy Policy Exchange at the Royal Over-seas League in the evening.

On 23 January, the Union Minister visited the Reay Primary School and attended a discussion on the Yangon University’s Master Plan at The Open University Future Learn.

Afterwards, the Union Minister went to the British Council in London’s Spring Gardens, where he participated in a discussion entitled ‘Continuous Professional Development for Teachers’ with delegations from Uganda and Nigeria. The Myanmar Ambassador to UK hosted a dinner for the Union Minister in the evening.

Union Minister Dr. Myo Thein Gyi departed from London on 24 January and landed in Yangon on the morning of 25 January. During his time in London, the Union Minister met with officials from organizations cooperating in Myanmar’s education reforms such as the British Council, the DFID, The Open University, the University College London -Institute of Education, the Cambridge Assessment English, McGraw-Hill Education, and the Irrawaddy Policy Exchange. He also had the opportunity to visit primary schools and universities during his trip.
