Experts discuss awareness, capacity building regulations for agro biotechnology in Nay Pyi Taw

THE MINISTRY of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation hosted a workshop on Awareness and Capacity Building on Regulations for Agricultural Biotechnology in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Thu expressed his hope that the workshop would be successful in writing bio-safety policies, a bio-safety framework and laws which are necessary for Myanmar.
“Myanmar needs to perform research on new agro technologies and new products, even as genetically modified agriculture products and livestock products are being produced globally,” said Union Minister Dr. Aung Thu.
Myanmar needs laws and regulations for scrutinizing genetically modified agricultural products which have the potential to be imported, and to develop bio-safety policies that are in conformity with the natural environment and social environment.
Consideration must be given to apply advanced scientific cultivation technologies in rural development businesses, such as the agriculture sector and livestock sector.
His ministry is giving priority to producing cost-effective and international-standard agricultural products for the nutrition, safety, and health of consumers, said the Union Minister.
Afterward, Ms. Rachel Nelson from the USDA reviewed international research, and Dr. Rhodora R Aldemita (OIC-Director) from ISAAA reported on the aim of the workshop and the step-by-step method to be undertaken in the discussion programs.
Dr. Carl Ramage, Dr. Rhodora R Aldemita, Dr. Aye Min, Dr. Saturnina C. Halos and Bhagirath Choudhary discussed issues related with genetically modified crops.
The workshop was held with the cooperation of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, with the intent to be supportive in compiling a Biosafety Framework and Law of Myanmar.
During the workshop, a review of bio-technologies for crops, important scientific methods for food production and conservation of bio crops were discussed.
