The
death toll from the floods has risen to 12 and over 132,000 people are
sheltering at nearly 300 temporary camps in regions and states in lower
Myanmar, according to the National Natural Disaster Management Committee.
Bago
Region saw the most number of deaths at four, followed by Mon State with three,
Magway Region with two, and Taninthayi Region, Kayin State and Nay Pyi Taw
Council Area with one each.
Nearly
30 houses were destroyed in the recent flood in Ayeyawady Region.
Over
94,000 people have taken refuge in 186 camps in Bago Region.
Over
460 people living near rivers in Magway Region have moved to three camps to
avoid possible floods as the water in the rivers is rising, though the region
is not experiencing floods at the moment.
The
Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement has spent over K554 million
on aid for flood victims and on compensation for those who lost their lives.
Torrential
rains, strong winds affect several areas
Torrential
rains yesterday destroyed some bridges and forced residents in low-lying areas
to leave their homes.
The
Maebaung Creek in Hpa-an eroded and destroyed an iron-reinforced bridge
yesterday.
The
Tikha Bridge in Wuntho also damaged a bridge on the Wuntho-Nankham Road in
Wuntho Township yesterday.
The
rising water in the Dayaemichaung River in DaikU Township inundated low-lying
areas. A total of 190 residents fled their homes to escape the flooding.
Meanwhile,
a six-hour torrential rainfall in Kyaukkyi Township inundated six villages and
nearly 200 residents fled their homes.
The
flood-battered Mokkamu Dyke in Nyaunglebin Township suffered a breach yesterday
morning and some 330 residents from six villages fled their homes.
Torrential
rains on Monday forced schools in Nyaunglebin, Thanatpin and Shwegyin townships
in Bago Region to shut down.
Torrential
rain has sparked flooding chaos in Htantabin and Kawa townships in Bago Region
and Paung Township in Mon State yesterday, with schools forced to close and
residents taking shelter at nearby houses in highland areas.
The
body of a soldier who went missing on 27 July in the flood in Bilin was found
yesterday.
At
the same time, traffic between Bilin and Thaton resumed, as the flood on the
road section receded. People displaced by the flood are still sheltering at 20
camps as the flood is inundating several parts of Bilin.
A
landslide occurred at Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda in Bahan Township, damaging a car and
injuring a man. The injured was taken to the hospital and he in a stable
condition.
Heavy
rain flooded five sections of the Dawei-Mitta Road in Dawei Township on 30
July, forcing eight schools to close.
Meanwhile,
strong winds struck Kawthoung, ripping the roofs off three houses. The same
disaster also hit Danubyu Township and destroyed two houses and one house in
Mawlamyinegyun.
