The
fire burning in Htein Bin garbage dump in Hlinethaya has been successfully
extinguished however the site is still under surveillance due to the heat
emissions from the bottom of the dump.
Yesterday
was the fourth day of surveillance and further containment procedures.
U
Myint Oo, Head of Yangon Region’s Northern District Fire service Department,
said that they survey the area for heat emissions and then uncover the area
with shovels and spray it with water or foam. “It’s a large area but there is
no need for alarm, ‘‘said U Myint Oo.” There’s no reason for another fire to
happen. It’s just because of the heat and gas emissions that we are still
surveying the area. I think it will be over in the next two days.’’
Dr.
Aung Myint Maw, Deputy Head of the Environmental Conservation and Cleaning
Department of the YCDC, said that they will tackle one zone per day to end all
gas and heat emissions and today they will be starting with zone A of the
garbage dump.
The
Htein Bin garbage dump fire started burning on of 21 April and ended twelve
days later on 2 May. A total force of 900 personnel from the fire department, Tatmadaw
Men, police force, the red cross, YCDC, and the irrigation department helped in
putting out the fire. The garbage dump was divided into four zones and
authorities handed one zone a day starting on 29 April and eventually
extinguished the fire.
Now
a team of 100 personnel have been left at the garbage dump to monitor the
situation and extinguish remaining heat emissions.
