A mass
walk on the occasion of the first week of December Sports Month was held in
Maungtaw and Buthidaung townships yesterday morning.
Hluttaw
representatives, personnel from government departments, civil societies,
teachers and residents participated in the mass walk events.
“The
Ministry of Health and Sports December walking event is held country-wide. Stability
and security had been achieved in Maungtaw after the event of August 25. That
is why this event had been organised for the people from Maungtaw Township to
participate. There were people who routinely walked for health even during the
time when there were disturbances. As it is becoming stable, mass walks will be
conducted every Saturday”, said Maungtaw District administrator U Ye Htut, who
participated in the Maungtaw Township mass walk.
The route
for the Maungtaw walk was from the women’s household work training school to
the bridge at the entrance of Maungtaw Township and on to Myothugyi Village. In
Buthidaung Township, the mass walk started in front of U Ottama Hall, went
around town and ended at the Buthidaung Myoma sports ground, where group physical
exercises were conducted.
“I always
walk every morning at 6. I think it is becoming safer and better to walk now.
Today was more enjoyable as I walked with departmental personnel”, said U Aung
Myint Naing, who lives in Bo Hmu Village, Ward 4, Maungtaw.
Although a
6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is still in place in Maungtaw and Buthidaung, it will
be adjusted as the security situation improves.
“The night
time curfew was announced once every two months, and once there is stability
and security, it will be changed accordingly” said U Ye Htut.
The
December Sports Month mass walk for the first week of December was held on
Saturday 2 December. It will be conducted every Saturday.
