Flooding increases prices of staples at Yangon Market

Pric es of commonly used ingredients including edible palm oil, dried fish and onions have increased in Yangon Region Market due to crop damaged caused by torrential rains, according to a report in the Myawady Daily yesterday.
Edible palm oil increased to Ks 1,800 per viss (3.6 pounds) from Ks 1,300 per viss. Onion prices increased to Ks 1,900 per viss from Ks 800 per viss in the Thiri Mingalar market.
Dried commerson’s anchovies has increased to Ks 7,500 per viss from Ks 5,500 per viss and dried Thunnus tonggol fish increased to Ks 18,000 per viss from Ks 15,000 per viss. Salt, fish paste, green chili power and other less perishable food stuffs are more stable. “The price of dried fish has increased around Ks 1000 and Ks 1500 per viss this year compared to the same period of last year. The dried fish are scarce in the rainy season,” said a dried fish sellers form the Thiri Mingalar market.
