The Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development has pledged to provide financial assistance and essential agricultural inputs to coffee growers in Shan State (South) to expand production and increase coffee exports.
The
commitment was made by Union Minister U Myo Zaw Thein during a visit on 1
August to the Green Gold Coffee Cooperative and the Coffeeneo processing
factory in Hopong Township, Pa-O Self-Administered Zone.
During the
inspection tour, the Union minister said the ministry would help coffee farmers
gain access to investment and production inputs to enable systematic expansion
of coffee cultivation. He also met local growers to discuss the challenges
facing the sector and ways to address them.
During the
visit, the Union minister stressed the importance of collecting accurate
grassroots data when planning rural development projects and urged local
authorities to prioritize practical projects that deliver tangible benefits
through close coordination among government agencies.
Shan State
(South) is internationally recognized as one of Myanmar’s leading producers of
high-quality specialty coffee. Myanmar exports thousands of tonnes of coffee
annually, generating an estimated US$3 million to US$5 million in foreign
exchange each year.
Myanmar’s
specialty coffee is primarily exported to the United States, the United
Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan Province of
China and Australia, while border trade also supplies neighbouring China and
