Water breached the Ngawun River embankment in Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Region, after heavy rain and river erosion caused a breakthrough beneath the embankment on 30 July.
Flooding has
affected five wards and several villages in Laymyethna Township, as well as 15
wards and villages across Hinthada, Yekyi, Ngathainggyoung, Kyonpyaw and
Kyaunggon townships.
Local
authorities, Tatmadaw members, police, firefighters, relief groups and
residents are carrying out rescue operations, delivering food and relief aid
and providing emergency healthcare to affected communities.
Engineering
teams are also strengthening weakened sections of the Ngawun embankment using
geobags, sandbags and steel sheet piles, with machinery and manpower deployed
to control further water inflow.
