Myanmar and the Republic of Korea sign Memoranda of Understanding
on Cooperation in the fields of Fisheries, Technical and Vocational
Training, and Environment.
The Myanmar delegation led by Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of
Myanmar, arrived back Nay Pyi Taw today evening after attending the
ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit and 1st Mekong-ROK Summit held in Busan,
the Republic of Korea from 25 to 27 November 2019.
On 25 November
2019, the State Counsellor attended opening ceremonies of the ASEAN-ROK
CEO Summit and ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit which were held at
the Exhibition Centre II, BEXCO. Then, the State Counsellor delivered a
keynote speech at the ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit under the
theme “Growing with Art”. In the afternoon, the State Counsellor held
roundtable talk with the Korean Students studying Myanmar Language from
the Busan University of Foreign Studies and Myanmar Students from the
Pukyong National University.
Later in the afternoon, the State
Counsellor delivered a keynote speech at the ASEAN-ROK CEO Summit under
the theme “New Partnership for Co-Prosperity of Korea and ASEAN
Businesses”. In the evening, the State Counsellor attended Welcoming
Dinner of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit hosted by Mr. Moon Jae-in,
President of the Republic of Korea.
On 26 November 2019, the
State Counsellor attended the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit. At the
Summit, the Leaders reviewed the ASEAN-ROK cooperation for the past 30
years and discussed its future direction to strengthen ASEAN-ROK
Dialogue Relations. The Leaders also exchanged views on matters relating
to enhancing connectivity towards prosperity and sustainability. Then,
the State Counsellor attended the ASEAN-ROK Startup Summit and toured
Innovation Showcase 2019.
Afterward, the State Counsellor
attended the Leaders’ Retreat Luncheon on Advancing Peace and Prosperity
on the Korean Peninsula at the Nurimaru APEC House.
In the
afternoon, the State Counsellor held a bilateral meeting with President
Moon Jae-in at the Westin-Chosun Hotel. At the meeting, the Leaders
cordially discussed matters pertaining to the consolidation of the
existing traditional friendly relations, progress on the implementation
of matters agreed by both sides during the recent state visit of
President Moon Jae-in to Myanmar, strengthening of mutually beneficial
cooperation, particularly in the fields of culture, education,
agriculture, fisheries, environment, infrastructure and rural
development as well as fostering people-to-people contacts. They also
discussed possible recruitment of more workers from Myanmar under the
Employment Permit System(EPS) of the Republic of Korea, cooperation
between Myanmar youth enthusiasts of Korean Culture and the K-Wave
Academy and the launching of solar power station in Mann Aung, Rakhine
State.
Subsequently, the two Leaders witnessed the signing of
the Memoranda of Understanding between the two Countries namely
“Cooperation in Fisheries”, “Cooperation in the Field of Technical and
Vocational Education and Training” and “Comprehensive Environmental
Cooperation”.
Then, the State Counsellor visited the ASEAN
Culture House and toured the exhibitions of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar,
Viet Nam and Thailand. Later in the evening, the State Counsellor
attended Mekong-ROK Welcoming Dinner.
On 27 November 2019, the
State Counsellor attended the 1st Mekong-ROK Summit where the Leaders
discussed and exchanged views on Mekong-ROK future cooperation for
co-prosperity. Then, the State Counsellor viewed the Special Exhibition
on Biodiversity Cooperation between Mekong Countries and the ROK.
In the afternoon, the State Counsellor met with Myanmar nationals
residing in the Republic of Korea at the Sasang District Town Hall and
responded to the queries raised by Myanmar workers.
A member of
the Myanmar Delegation and Union Minister for International Cooperation U
Kyaw Tin attended the “2019 International Development Cooperation Day
in Korea” on 25November 2019. During the Ceremony, the Foreign Minister
of the Republic of Korea and the Ministers representing Cambodia, Laos
PDR, Myanmar, Viet Nam and the Philippines signed the “Memorandum of
Understanding on Development Cooperation”. Under the MOU, the ROK and
the five ASEAN Member States will strengthen cooperation in the areas of
digital economy, higher education, eliminating explosive remnants of
war, smart city, and connectivity. The Union Minister also participated
as a panelist at the panel discussion of the International Development
Cooperation Day under the theme “Development Cooperation towards
People-centred ODA”.
At the end of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative
Summit and 1st Mekong-ROK Summit, the “ASEAN-ROK Joint Vision Statement
for Peace, Prosperity and Partnership”, “Co-Chairs’ Statement on the
ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit” and “Mekong-Han River Declaration” were
issued.
During the visit, the State Counsellor was accompanied by
Union Minister for Union Government Office, U Min Thu, Union Minister
for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Thu, Union Minister
for International Cooperation U Kyaw Tin and responsible officials.
