A coordination meeting of the High-Level Working Group on
Cooperation of Labour Affairs (HLWG-CLA) was held at the Ministry of
Labour, Immigration and Population in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
 The
meeting was attended by representatives from the 16 ministries that are
members to the working committee. Union Minister U Thein Swe first
briefed on the meeting agenda which includes sharing the results of the
337th Session of the Governing Body of the ILO on Myanmar’s process in
abolishing forced labour, its future processes, and establishing a
National Complaints Mechanism and forming an interim mechanism before it
 is completed.
The Union Minister said ILO celebrated their
centenary in Yangon on 21 October this year in conjunction with the 14th
National Tripartite Dialogue Forum. He said ILO’s Deputy
Director-General Mr Greg Vines attended both events and constructive
results from discussions there were carried over to the 337th ILO
governing body’s session. He said this resulted in the removal of facts
distorted from the reality on the ground from the proposal by US and
labour representative group to apply pressure on Myanmar. The Union
Minister said that Myanmar’s Permanent Representative said ILO’s
decision will give Myanmar enough time to show its improvements by the
338th Session in March 2020. He said cooperation with both employers and
workers is required in implementing the National Complaints Mechanism.
He said methods to resolve reports of forced labour and setting up
Standard Operation Procedures will be needed when the national committee
 has been approved.
