The
Mon State Forest Department will develop a mangrove forest in the Pharlain
region in Ye township in the next rainy season, under the reforestation
project, according to a report in Myawady Daily yesterday.
“We
are planning to grow some 20 acres of mangroves, in cooperation with the local
people of the Pharlain region. The union government will provide the necessary
funds to grow the mangrove forests,” said a department official.
The
government is working on conserving and growing mangrove forests to prevent
erosions triggered by floods and to produce forest products.
Mangrove
forests are mainly found in Ayeyawady, Taninthayi and Rakhine.
Mangrove
forests can prevent erosions and produce firewood, charcoal, medicinal plants
and other forest products.
Moreover,
mangrove forests near the sea can prevent damage to agriculture lands by
obstructing the inflow of salt water near beaches.
According
to the survey conducted by the Mon State Forest Department, more than 1,500
acres of mangrove forest exist in Mawlamyine District. The department will
continue to conduct a survey of mangrove forests in Thaton District.
