Myanma Radio and
Television held a ceremony celebrating its 72nd anniversary at the MRTV
Auditorium in Tatkon, Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Dr. Pe Myint,
the Union Minister for Information, gave the keynote speech, saying MRTV
carries the pride of the nation by keeping the people informed of current and
important news. He said MRTV has stood with the people throughout all the
political transitions of Myanmar and will continue to be present in the nation
as long as the world stands. Next, the Union Minister conferred awards for
Outstanding Civil Servants of 2017 an ten recipients, and one gold medal for
achieving first place in international sporting events. The Deputy Minister, U
Aung Hla Tun, then conferred awards on seven individuals who achieved prizes in
trainings sent by the ministry and to three individuals who won in literary
competitions.
MRTV was founded
in 1946 with the name Bama Athan (Voice of Burma) when the British established
Burma Broadcasting Service (BBS) carrying Burmese language for its programmes.
The service was renamed Myanma Athan on 28 November 1958, and with the arrival
of colour television on 1 November 1980, it was renamed to Myanma Radio and
Television and went on to become one of the most successful state-owned media
services.
Present at the
ceremony were MRTV Director-General U Myint Htwe, Director-General of
Information and Public Relations Department U Ye Naing, Director-General of Printing
and Publication Department U Aung Myo Myint, Managing Director of News and
Periodicals Enterprise U Kyaw Soe and staff members from MRTV and invited
guests.
