A delegation led by Vice President U Myint Swe
attended the second Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (LMC) Leaders’ Meeting, held in
the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, on 10 January, and left Phnom Penh on a
special flight yesterday afternoon.
The vice president was seen off at Phnom Penh
International Airport by Cambodian Minister for Public Works and Transport Sun
Chanthol and other officials.
The Vice President and his delegation returned to
Nay Pyi Taw at 3 p.m. and was welcomed by deputy ministers Rear-Admiral Myint
Nwe, Maj-Gen Than Htut, U Kyaw Myo, U Win Maw Tun and other officials at the
Nay Pyi Taw International Airport.
China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet
Nam are member countries in the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC), which is a
programme for political, security, economic and social cooperation in the Mekong
region.
MLC was initiated on 13 November, 2014, at the
Asean-China summit meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw for cooperation among the Mekong-Lancang
region countries for sustainable development in the Mekong-Lancang region and
was fully established in 2016.
The aim of the MLC is to support the socio-economic
development of countries in the region, increase the livelihood of the people,
reduce development disparities, support the establishment of the Asean community,
increase the implementation of the 2030 United Nations sustainable development goals,
and increase cooperation among developing countries and China by setting up a
MLC cooperation fund of US$300 to implement the cooperation projects.
At the second Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders’
Meeting, a Phnom Penh proclamation was issued and a five-year action plan (2018-2022)
to implement 214 cooperation projects among the Mekong-Lancang countries, including
10 projects in Myanmar, was approved.
